A temporary stainless steel rod is most commonly used to hold the bones steady. The rod (medically known as a K-wire) will stick out the tip of the toe and removed in the office once healed – 2 -6 weeks later. Removing of the rod is doesn’t elicit pain usually, rather just an uncomfortable feeling. Sometimes a metal fusion device (for bone mending procedures) is buried within the bone and doesn’t need to be removed, thought this type of implant is not ideal when toe relocation surgery is necessary. A hammertoe is a toe that becomes bent and contracted at one of the joints. This most commonly occurs in the second toe, but may occur in any toe. There are two types of hammertoes. Flexible hammertoes are less severe and the affected toes are still moveable at the joint. With rigid hammertoes, the tendons tighten and the joints become misaligned and immobile. Here’s the kicker. They start off as a flexible deformity, meaning they can be reduced easily to normal position, but over time they become more rigid and unable to correct with manual reduction.
Stomach muscles are important in supporting the back. This exercise strengthens and tones abdominal muscles as well as the back and thigh muscles. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Tilt your pelvis so that your lower back presses against the floor. Squeeze your buttocks together, tighten your stomach muscles and lift your hips off the floor until your shoulders, hips and knees are in a straight line.
